Benny and Friends

Consideration for Best Children’s Release

Ben Thatcher (Benny Time) announces the release of his 4th album for children – Benny and Friends, out on May 14 2022, with Michael McGlynn (L-FRESH THE LION, Little May, The Vegetable Plot) at the production helm. The project features a cast of collaborators across Australia and New Zealand.

“My intention for this album was always very clear. It’s an album of community. An album that celebrates and champions Australian children’s music and all it can be (with a little help from our cross Tasman colleagues in New Zealand), while spotlighting how much stronger things can be when all involved feel welcome, invited and heard However, this is all said in the blissful glow of hindsight. Yes it was my intention, but I could never have imagined just how real it would turn out to be.”

This IS an album of community, entirely. A group of musicians and friends from many parts and performance, catching up and making music. Brought together with extreme clarity by Michael McGlynn, to celebrate children and the music we are fortunate  enough to give them.

The Do Song.

I fell in love with The Do Song long before a note was recorded. The opportunity to  have these incredible artists to be involved was a little bit of a dream come true for me. And then only getting them to sing briefly and more talking, well, that’s some childish cheekiness right there. And it delighted me.

Cars Are Everywhere

There is always an attempt in children’s music to find ways to push a style that perhaps you wouldn’t expect. And this is it. Punk. Seemed a perfect fit for the heavy intrusive notion of cars.

A Little Recycling Adventure.

A little recycling adventure is a poignant example of what can happen when all involved just sit down and agree to ‘see what happens’. It’s not that it had no vision but rather the vision changed every time a new voice was introduced. However what developed is a coherent mix of many minds of which I’m incredibly proud. Not just of the song itself but the way it embodied the idea of community present throughout the whole album

He Needs  to wee.

He needs to wee was written with my children around the dinner table. Makes total sense. Between me and the kids, it had a clear vision very early on, and Michael McGlynn the producer , to his credit, was immediately on board with the lunacy and enormity and what came out, is in my humble opinion, the greatest thing I’ve ever created. And all it took was to listen to my children.

Cars are everywhere (surf)

As with most rehearsals, it’s easy to meander off into other genres. On this occasion, the meandering was just simply too much fun to ignore. And who doesn’t love surf rock.

Stepping Stones

I can’t talk about this song without talking about Aunty Tracey Linn Bostock. Her poem, by the same name, owns this song. Its depth, its purpose, its messaging, all comes down to the power of her words. It is a song that found it hard to find its place but once Aunty Trace lent her words, it fast became irreplaceable.

Little Grey cloud (it’s OK to cry)

The final result of little grey cloud is very different to where it started. It was a long journey to find its final sound but early on, Claudia, Michael and myself knew it was something special. And it is. Its a song that has the distinct feeling it has existed long before us. I’m grateful to it for allowing us to be a part of it and hopeful it gives children the permission they need. One can never underestimate the power of a good cry. I also got to work more directly with Claudia Robin Gunn, something I wish all people had the chance to do. She is, without hesitation, MY great old cloud. Bringing wisdom when, I feel, she may not even be aware of it.

How great we are.

This is a simple song wrapped in the complexity of large voices and instruments. We are better together, we are faster, stronger, more fun, it IS that simple and I wanted that to be said in the most delicate way possible. Big and strong does not always have to come in the form of noise and chaos. It can be simple and or can find a place for everyone.

Cars are everywhere (jazz)

Cars have been everywhere for ever. Even back in the 60’s

Goodmorning

Dreams hold a special place for children. Not only are they outrageous and filled with desperate levels of absurdity, they can change the way a child sees their day. And that’s what this song is about, your dreams can be just as strong as when you’re awake. And to remind children, every parent and carer dreams constantly about the strength of their children.

Artists Quotes

I was over the moon to get the chance to work with Benny on the song Little Grey Cloud (It’s OK To Cry). Singing harmonies is my favourite thing to do in the world, and supporting the message of this song – that letting your sad feelings out leaves space for bringing the lightness back in – by bringing some layers to Benny’s amazing metaphor was a privilege and a delight. When I first met Benny I was blown away by his music knowledge, deep catalogue of kindie songs, genuine passion for children’s music that both entertains and delivers meaning; and his profound respect for the most important audience of all~ children. I hope everyone who hears this song is encouraged to not be afraid of big emotions but just remember the little grey cloud who feels better after it rains

Claudia Robin Gunn

“When Benny asks, we say OF COURSE! If Benny was a song he’d be The Do Song- collaborative, playful, surrounded by friends and DO-ing all he can to spread positivity and love far and wide!  His new album takes his creativity and production to great new heights. It’s always a joy making music with Benny and friends!

Tiptoe Giants

Benny is both the biggest fan and the biggest champion of Australian kids music. No-one is more universally loved in our scene than him. I’m so proud and moved by this beautiful album he’s made, and delighted that I got to make a contribution to one of the tracks. Just like Benny himself, this album is kind, funny, warm-hearted, filled with creativity and wonderful to spend time with.

Luke Escombe – The Vegetable Plot

We loved, and are so grateful for the opportunity to include our children on Benny’s beautiful, ‘How Great We Are’, track and know that this is an album that will be well loved and used by many!”
